Know Your Hair Type: The Curl Pattern Guide

Why pattern matters

Hair type isn't a label — it's a map. Knowing your curl pattern tells you how much moisture your hair needs, how fragile it is, and which styling methods will bring out your best definition.

The four families

  • Type 2 (Wavy): Loose S-shaped waves. Loves lightweight mousses and light hydration; heavy butters weigh it down.
  • Type 3 (Curly): Defined spirals with spring. Needs layered moisture — leave-in, cream, then a styler for hold.
  • Type 4 (Coily): Tight zigzags and coils. The most fragile of all; craves rich butters, oils, and protective styling to retain length.
  • Straight (Type 1): Rare in the Kaleidoscope world, but the same scalp-first principles apply.

Pattern vs. porosity vs. density

Pattern is just one piece. Porosity tells you what your hair absorbs; density (how many strands per square inch) tells you how much product to use. A 4C, high-porosity, low-density head needs a completely different routine than a 3B, low-porosity, high-density one — even though both are "curly."

How to find yours

Wash, condition, and let your hair air dry with no product. The shape it takes naturally is your pattern. Photograph it — it's easier to compare to a chart than to remember.

The routine shift by type

  • Wavy: light leave-in, air dry, minimal manipulation.
  • Curly: layer moisture, style soaking wet, diffuse or air dry.
  • Coily: section, detangle soaking wet with slip, seal with butter, protect nightly.

The takeaway

Type is a starting point, not a box. Use it to choose your first products — then let your hair's response fine-tune the routine from there.
